Does wheel width have to match tire width?

Rims are measured in inches (most of the time), with a diameter and width, and tyres need to match the width of the rim and the diameter to “work”. As tyres are made from rubber, you can make a narrower or wider tyre fit on the same rim, but only about 1 size up or down from the “ideal”.

How do I find out my rim size?

First, start with the wheel size for your vehicle. You can find that on the sidewall of the tires on your original wheels or the inside frame of the driver’s door. How much wider is a tire than a rim?
