Why is it called Donkey Kong Country?
The original goal the developers had for the game was to convince players to trade their country for bananas, thus allowing Rare to form a “Donkey Kong Country” with their newly-obtained land. This didn’t quite work out, but the name stuck.

Donkey Kong Island, also known as DK Island and Kong Isle, is the home of the Kong Family, many of their Animal Buddies, and several of their enemies. It is also the location where many games in the Donkey Kong series take place. It debuted in the game Donkey Kong Country.

In the Japanese version, it says Super Donkey Kong (the Japanese name for Donkey Kong Country) and shows Donkey and Diddy walking with Rambi, Squawks and Expresso with a lone Slippa and some Zingers following them.
