You can just start an MP game with a password on to prevent anyone you do not want there joining. Then use the steam overlay to invite your friends to the game you started. If you start the game you will own the save it is on. So whenever you play with that same group you can pick up where you left off.

Generating the Custom Map
- Navigate to Files > Config Files.
- Open 7 Days to Die Server Settings.
- Change the Gameworld= section to the specified name of the map you are using.
- Change the GameName= section to a world name of your choosing.
