Does wheel width have to match tire width?
Does wheel width have to match tire width?
Rims are measured in inches (most of the time), with a diameter and width, and tyres need to match the width of the rim and the diameter to “work”. As tyres are made from rubber, you can make a narrower or wider tyre fit on the same rim, but only about 1 size up or down from the “ideal”.
How do I find out my rim size?
First, start with the wheel size for your vehicle. You can find that on the sidewall of the tires on your original wheels or the inside frame of the driver’s door. Check out Tire Size Explained (Reading the Sidewall) for more. The wheel diameter (in inches or millimeters) is the fifth set of numbers and letters.
How much wider is a tire than a rim?
As a general rule of thumb, it’s safe to fit a tire up to 20 millimeters wider than stock on the original rim. The actual width of the tire will vary depending on the width of the rim: The tire will expand 5 millimeters for every half inch (12.5 millimeters) increase in rim width.
