What is a leather slicker?

A leather burnisher, also referred to as a leather slicker, is a tool usually made from wood. They, via the heat generated from friction, help to smoothen and harden the edges of leather goods. Some burnishers are hand-powered, and some are electric leather burnisher machines.

What can I use to slick leather?

Slickers come in plastic, glass and wood – any of those will do the trick! Keep in mind that burnishing an edge with gum tragacanth will essentially seal the edge, so if you’re going to dye the leather, do it before you burnish.

What is a slicker used for?

A Slicker Brush is a pet grooming tool used on dogs and cats, with the primary purpose of getting rid of any debris, loose hair and mats/ knots in the fur. It is typically rectangular in shape and has fine wire bristles, packed tightly together.

How do you seal leather edges?

To burnish, apply water, wax or gum tragacanth to the leather edge. Rub a burnishing tool vigorously back and forth with a good amount of pressure; you want to create heat to work the wax or gum into the leather fibers. This compresses the leather fibers and seals the edge against moisture.
