What is Hairspray the movie about?
In 1960s Baltimore, dance-loving teen Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) auditions for a spot on “The Corny Collins Show” and wins. She becomes an overnight celebrity, a trendsetter in dance, fun and fashion. Perhaps her new status as a teen sensation is enough to topple Corny’s reigning dance queen and bring racial integration to the show.
Hairspray / Film synopsis
How many Hairspray movies are there?
Hairspray has had many incarnations: the 1988 John Waters film, starring Ricki Lake; the 2002 Tony Award-winning musical; the 2007 musical film adaptation; and, as of December 7, the live televised version on NBC.
Is Hairspray the movie appropriate?
Inappropriate for younger kids
The movie was very entertaining as far as a musical goes, but the “message” of fat-shaming and racism seem to go un-noticed. I am surprised so many parents miss the overt sexual innuendo and promiscuity.
Did Travolta enjoy Hairspray?
“You wouldn’t imagine growing that large would get the kind of attention I did and people forgot I was underneath it,” Travolta said. “I would get gropes and feels and of course I was a little slutty about how I handled it. You know, I kind of didn’t care.”
