Lomax was named the state of Oregon Athlete of the Year in 1979 and 1980. He went on to a distinguished career in the NFL with the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals. In 1993, Lomax was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, followed by the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996.
