Your tongue is mostly made of muscles. It’s anchored inside of your mouth by webs of strong tissue and it’s covered by mucosa (a moist, pink lining that covers certain organs and body cavities). Your tongue is also covered with different types of papillae (bumps) and taste buds.

The average tongue length for males is 8.5cm and females usually have slightly shorter tongues, averaging on 7.9cm. The Guinness record holder for the longest tongue is a young man who has a tongue that is 10.1cm long.

The tongue is vital for chewing and swallowing food, as well as for speech. The four common tastes are sweet, sour, bitter, and salty. A fifth taste, called umami, results from tasting glutamate (present in MSG). The tongue has many nerves that help detect and transmit taste signals to the brain.
Is it normal to have a ball in your tongue?
