Why is it ROC instead of Russia?
ROC stands for Russian Olympic Committee That is due to the repercussions of the Russian doping scandal at the Sochi Olympics. The end result is that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) isn’t allowing Russia to compete in the Games, but Russian athletes are able to compete still on a team of Russian athletes.
How long does Russia have to compete as ROC?
In 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency banned Russia from all international sporting competitions, including the Olympics, for four years over a doping scandal. The punishment was cut in half to two years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport following a 2020 appeal and now ends in December 2022.
Why can’t Russia compete in the Olympics?
In order to protect the integrity of global sports competitions and for the safety of all the participants, the IOC EB recommends that International Sports Federations and sports event organisers not invite or allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in international competitions.
