Many dialect words and placenames from Old Norse survive in the North East as this area was subject to Danelaw. ‘Snap’ comes from ‘snap tin’, those little metal boxes that miners took their lunch to work in. They made a snapping noise when shut, because of a seal around the lid that stopped dust getting in.
